چکیده

16 In this work we present measurements of vegetation cover over parabolic dunes with 17 different degree of activation along the north-eastern Brazilian coast. We extend 18 the local values of the vegetation cover density to the whole dune by correlating 19 measurements with the relative brightness index C of high resolution QuickBird 20 panchromatic satellite image of the dune field. Next, we introduce the vegetation 21 data into a continuous model for vegetated dunes, coupling sand erosion and vegeta22 tion growth, and perform simulations of parabolic dunes. Finally, from the compar23 ison of both, the measurements and the simulation results, we show that the model 24 is able to predict the dune shape and the vegetation distribution of real parabolic 25 dunes as result of the evolution of a blow-out. 26

Parabolic dunes in north-eastern Brazil

In this work we present measurements of vegetation cover over parabolic dunes with different degree of activation along the north-eastern Brazilian coast. We are able to extend the local values of the vegetation cover density to the whole dune by correlating measurements with the gray-scale levels of a high resolution satellite image of the dune field. The empirical vegetation distribution is f...

The effects of interdune vegetation changes on eolian dune field evolution: a numerical-modeling case study at Jockey's Ridge, North Carolina, USA

Changes in vegetation cover within dune fields can play a major role in how dune fields evolve. To better understand the linkage between dune field evolution and interdune vegetation changes, we modified Werner’s (Geology, 23, 1995: 1107–1110) dune field evolution model to account for the stabilizing effects of vegetation. Model results indicate that changes in the density of interdune vegetati...

Investigating and Predicting the Extension of Dunes Using Land Change Modeler (LCM) in the North West of Yazd, Iran

In the present study, in order to calculate the movement of sand dunes in the period between 2001 and 2010, the ASTER (Advanced Space-borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) images were used. The training samples were obtained from the field, and the images of the years 2001 and 2010 were classified using maximum likelihood algorithm and decision making tree. The study area was classi...

1. Introduction Among sedimentary systems that are rich and poor in terms of sediment load, a different organization of the sand dunes can be seen. Barchan dunes are one of the accumulative landforms of wind that are considered from poor sedimentary systems in desert environments. The dunes are the crescent shape, and have two horns at the end. Along the horns the prevailing wind direction...

Transformation of barchans into parabolic dunes under the influence of vegetation

Barchan dunes were found to transform into parabolic dunes and vice versa when the amount of vegetation on and around them changes. This work presents the first numerical simulation of this effect. We propose a continuum model for the density of vegetation. An established sand transport model is used for simulating the evolution of the dunes.
